Phnom Penh, April 1, 2024 – As Cambodia prepares to usher in the Khmer Traditional New Year this mid-April, Sankranta celebrations planned across the capital and various provinces are set to draw both domestic and international visitors in large numbers. These festivities, steeped in rich cultural traditions, promise a vibrant tableau of events, from traditional ceremonies to modern entertainment, highlighting the diverse heritage of Cambodia.
The capital city of Phnom Penh is poised to host the Wat Phnom Sankranta at the historic Wat Phnom site from April 13 to 16. Attendees can look forward to a plethora of activities including the New Tevoda welcome ceremony, a Buddha statue procession, the building of sand mountains, a Buddha statue bathing ceremony, as well as an exhibition showcasing ancient paintings and cultural artifacts. The event will also feature art performances, concerts, and popular games, creating a lively atmosphere for all ages.
Provincial cities are not to be left behind, with an array of Sankranta celebrations such as Battambang and Prey Veng Sankranta 2024 running from April 12 to 16, Pursat and Oddar Meanchey Sankranta 2024 from April 13 to 16, and Kampot Sankranta 2024 from April 14 to 16, among others. These events will offer a rich mix of activities including art performances, concerts, Kun Khmer matches, local product fairs, food fairs, lantern flying, and firework displays, showcasing the best of local culture and hospitality.
While the renowned Angkor Sankranta will not take place this year, the Siem Reap provincial administration is actively preparing for the Siem Reap Sankranta, ensuring the spirit of celebration is alive and well in the heart of Cambodia's cultural landscape.
